ENNUI. Schwebezustände – States of Suspension
Corona-Krise, Krieg, die drohende Öko-Katastrophe: Auch in den bisher vergleichsweise geschützten westlichen Gesellschaften greifen Angst und Verunsicherung zunehmend um sich. Die Endlosschleife von Anspannung und Ohnmacht lässt sich nur mühsam durchbrechen, wenn Hoffnung zum Spielball politischer Machtinteressen wird. ENNUI bezeichnet einen existenziellen Schwebezustand zwischen bleierner Langeweile, Überdruss, unerträglicher Leichtigkeit des Seins, Weltschmerz und nervöser Antizipation, die sich im Warteraum des Nicht-Mehr und Noch-Nicht abspielt. Es ist die atemlose Ruhe vor dem Sturm, der gedehnte Moment vor dem jähen Umschlagen, das kaum lesbare Schild beim langen Warten am Wegesrand, auf dem irgendwann einmal stand, wohin die Reise geht. Die Ausstellung versammelt Künstler*innen, die sich dieser absurden, melancholischen und potenziell gefährlichen Gemengelage auf unterschiedliche Weise in Film, Fotografie, Malerei und Installation nähern. Das verbindende Moment sind die Zwischenstimmungen, die medienübergreifend zum Ausdruck kommen: dauerhaft im Aufbruch, kurz vor dem Zusammenbruch, ständig auf dem Sprung.

Allen voran in Zeiten der Krise spielt das Politische eine bedeutende Rolle in der Kunst. Ob als selbst oder von außen auferlegte Erwartungshaltung gesellschaftspolitisch relevant zu sein, als Verschreibung an oder bewusste Abgrenzung von einer Verantwortung. Besonders seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert waren nicht zuletzt in Reaktion auf die Entwicklungen der Zeit, wiederholt Phasen verstärkter Politisierung zu beobachten.
Die Gruppenausstellung „Selbst und Zweck“ vereint sechs künstlerische Positionen, die sich mit Rissen und Brüchen der Gegenwart beschäftigen. Die zum Teil eigens für die Ausstellung entwickelten Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch eine formale und thematische Vielfalt aus. Präsentiert werden multimediale Skulpturen, Installationen und Malereien. Neben forschenden Vorgehensweisen, die sich konkreten gesellschaftspolitischen Fragen widmen, finden sich Ansätze, die das Spannungsfeld von Kunst und Gesellschaft auf einer abstrakten Ebene behandeln. Sie widmen sich Themen und Mechanismen von Macht und Widerstand, Fürsorge und Identität aus gleichermaßen politischen wie poetischen Perspektiven.

PROTECTION PROCEDURES gathers contributions and works which address different forms of power and powerlessness through (artistic) research and investigation, using aesthetics as a key tool in order to search for connections within realms of the unknown and the unspoken. The ongoing state of emergency highlighted by the pandemic and its effects presents starting points to engage with the contexts and infrastructures of global crises and the violence of their continuous normalization. As the political, social, and individual pressures on the existential working conditions of artists and cultural workers intensify, joint efforts are required to raise awareness of the importance of care, solidarity, and knowledge exchange. One recurring question in PROTECTION PROCEDURES is: How can artistic and cultural practices contribute to struggles that urgently need to be held, felt, and acted on?

Those who want to understand the present, must learn its language. Considering the changes within media landscape and the complex challenges posed by an increasingly globalized world, it becomes clear that our well-familiar vocabulary no longer adequately describes given realities.
1969 LO was the first digitally transmitted message. It was intended to be the word login, but the system crashed after the first two letters. Whereas the acronym LOL – Laughing out loud, deriving from internet slang, has become a firmly established element of our language and has become part of the digital body language shaped by algorithms. Only fifty years lie between the first attempts to exchange information via computer and today’s use of language codes. Thus LO and lol reflect both the enormous speed of ongoing digital transformation and the formative influence it exerts on our communication behaviour.
The exhibition Lo(l) – Embodied Language, combining various artistic approaches in large-format text, sound and video installations, examines how language, writing, images and sounds connect us digitally in real time and permeate our living and working worlds. Recent developments in information and communication technology, including the challenges and opportunities they present, are critically discussed in this group exhibition.

»TRANSITIONS. Festival Jüdischer Gegenwartskünste« takes place on August 18th – 20th, 2021 at Holzmarkt 25 and will also be streamed live via the DAGESH YouTube Channel.
DAGESH in cooperation with Asylum Arts, the global network of Jewish culture present the multimedia art exhibition »TRANSITIONS«. Over 15 Jewish artists from Europe and the American continent engage via video and sound art, text composition, and other forms of visual and digital arts with the liminal space, a threshold condition in which society currently finds itself, both socially and politically. A “betwixt and between” state, where the usual order of things is disrupted and new potentials and limits can be challenged and explored.
»TRANSITIONS« seeks to create a new Jewish visibility that transcends borders in a European and transatlantic exchange. Via video and sound art, text composition, and other forms of visual and digital arts, over 15 artists will showcase their experience and understanding of solidarity and resistance through aesthetics and artistic practice from a shared and yet diverse contemporary Jewish perspective.
The concept of »TRANSITIONS« describes a liminal space, a threshold condition in which society currently finds itself, both socially and politically. A “betwixt and between” state, where the usual order of things is disrupted and new potentials and limits can be challenged and explored. With »TRANSITIONS« we seek to aesthetically explore ways to create newness founded on the very loss and (transgenerational) trauma of the original places. Speaking from a multiplicity of situated Jewish positions, the art pieces in the exhibition will display the artists’ engagement with political events, discourses and movements that impact and mobilise them in their specific context.

At the beginning of the winter semester at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, the Hiscox Art Prize 2020 will be awarded on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at 7:30 pm. Since 2008, this prize has been awarded annually by the specialist insurer Hiscox in cooperation with the HFBK in the amount of 7,500 euros. The HFBK professors in the fields of painting/drawing, sculpture and time-related media will nominate twelve outstanding students for the pre-selection, who will then present their work to an expert jury.
This year's external jury will be made up of the director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle Prof. Dr. Alexander Klar, the curator Joanna Warsza and the director of the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig Franciska Zólyom. The following artists will present themselves in an exhibition: Manuel Funk, Moritz Haas, Paula Hoffmann, Stephanie Jacobs, Helene Kummer, Amy Maga, Esteban Pérez, Marie Pietsch, Katja Pilipenko, Jakob Sitter, Chenxi Zhong, Laura Ziegler+hintersection. Their art can be experienced by the public in the entrance hall and in the gallery rooms of the HFBK on the opening evening and then daily from 2 to 6 pm until November 7, 2020. In addition, the opening will be broadcast live and the exhibition can be viewed in the HFBK's online gallery for longer periods.
Against The Wall
The screening intervention Against the Wall presents a selection of videos and films by nine artists that address the need to (de)construct collective and individual political meanings in times of total crisis.Therefore, the project brings together works that debate on social erosion, (mis)communication, power, ideology, memory and identity. Since the Coronavirus has affected the way society and human relations are organized, the works will be projected on the facade of a building, allowing everyone to watch the works from the street without infecting each other.

PAT PAT PAT. A romance with (Im)material exposes the perspectives of young artists based in Vienna and Hamburg. Individual works as well as collaborative projects spanning the mediums of painting, installation, sculpture“and 3d animation extensively explore dimensions of materiality and the duality of this expression with a material.
Like a romance, the relationship is shaped by emotions and affections. The exhibition shows a broad range of formats and stages of the relationship between artists and material: This can be a fascination and fragile infatuation in which the material helps to overcome one’s imagination. At the same time, an interdependence emerges where the artists do not just use a material, but rather integrate with it. The relationship can also adopt a brutal attitude, a processing of the material in order to reach the desired result. An end and a break-up appear. Besides, the autonomy and agency of the material may emerge, shaping itself, transforming, and obscuring the boundaries between human and non-human activity. Corresponding with digital formats, which regularly confront us as immaterial, the artistic works also investigate the links between material and immaterial.
PAT PAT PAT is a collaborative project from students of Hfbk University of Fine Arts Hamburg and Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The project pursues an exchange practice both on a theoretical and artistic level on the subject of materiality, texture, and surface. The first exhibition "Finding comfort in materiality" was presented in April 2019 in Hamburg and functioned as starting point and intensive exchange phase. The second exhibition, A Romance with (Im)material takes place in Vienna and expands to the sophisticated theme to question the relation between artists and material. A catalog for the exhibition in Hamburg will be presented in the exhibition in Vienna.
